SS-GB

SS-GB is a fiction novel by Len Deighton about what life would have been like in occupied Britain after a successful German invasion. The book does not really go into detail about how this situation came about, but rather concentrates on what life would have been like, a year after the invasion (in November 1941) if it came about.

In the background story of the novel, Churchill has been shot, the King is imprisoned in the Tower of London, Germany and the Soviet Union have remained friendly (as they were in reality, from 1939 until Operation Barbarossa in June 1941), and the United States considers the war to be over. Life however goes on in Britain, and most of the population are not fighting the Germans in the resistance, but are instead learning to live with the realities of defeat and occupation. The plot concerns a Detective Archer of Scotland Yard and his attempt to solve a murder.

As you might expect for a novel about Nazi occupation, the book is very dark, moody and perhaps a little disturbing. I felt it also felt it was a realistic portrayal of what might have been: one that will remind you of what the Allies were fighting for in World War II, and how glad we should be that they won.

In summary, I would certainly recommend reading this book!

A special edition of Deighton’s classic thriller, the first and certainly greatest ‘what-if?’ novel about the Second World War, to tie in with the new major BBC series starring Sam Riley and adapted by the writers of Skyfall and Spectre.

In February 1941 British Command surrendered to the Nazis. Churchill has been executed, the King is in the Tower and the SS are in Whitehall…

For nine months Britain has been occupied - a blitzed, depressed and dingy country. However, it’s ‘business as usual’ at Scotland Yard run by the SS when Detective Inspector Archer is assigned to a routine murder case. Life must go on.

But when SS Standartenfuhrer Huth arrives from Berlin with orders from the great Himmler himself to supervise the investigation, the resourceful Archer finds himself caught up in a high level, all action, espionage battle.

Product Description:
What if WWII went the other way? In this alternative-history novel, Deighton imagines a chilling world where British Command surrendered to the Nazis in 1941, Churchill has been shot, the King is in the dungeon, and the SS are in Whitehall. In occupied Britain, Scotland Yard conducts business as usual...only under the command of the SS. Detective Inspector Archer is assigned to what he believes is a routine murder case--until SS Standartenführer Huth arrives from Berlin with orders from Himmler himself to supervise the investigation. Soon, Archer finds himself caught in a high level, action-packed espionage battle.

This is a spy story different from any other--one that only Deighton, with his flair for historical research and his narrative genius, could have written.
